DIY Projects – do I need Planning Permission?
Many of us have found ourselves with extra time at home during the COVID-19 lockdown. If you are thinking of using that time to get underway with a long overdue DIY project it is important to consider whether you need to seek Planning Permission or Building Regulations Consent from Cornwall Council. With all building work, the owner of the property or land is responsible for meeting the relevant planning rules and building regulations. Do I need Planning Permission?
You can make certain types of minor changes to your house without applying for planning permission, this is called “permitted development”.
The Planning Portal website provides an interactive tool giving you informal guidance on householder permitted development rights. The interactive guide offers information about common household projects and is being delivered in partnership with the Local Authority (Cornwall Council) and the Government’s Planning Inspectorate. There is also lots of information and signposting on Cornwall Council’s website about planning permission, building regulations, enforcement, and pre-application advice.
Planning Policy
Cornwall Council Planning policies give residents, businesses and developers an indication of what type and scale of development is appropriate and are used to determine planning applications.
The Planning Policy Team is responsible for preparing the planning policy, through consultation with local communities, which sets the broad framework for acceptable development in Cornwall. The Cornwall Local Plan was formally adopted in November 2016. It provides a positive and flexible overarching planning policy framework for Cornwall up to 2030.
