Priory Meadow Seed Collection Event
(3 August 2010)

As part of the ongoing Priory Wildflower Meadow project, Bodmin Town Council is organising a seed collection event at the Beacon Local Nature Reserve on Wednesday
18th August 2010 from 2pm until 4pm.
We would like interested residents and visitors to help us collect seed from the wildflower meadows on the Beacon. This will then be grown on at a nursery in the county before being planted into the Priory Wildflower
Meadow at another community event in the Spring.
We will meet at the car park entrance at around 2pm. If you require further information, please contact Jude Hayes at Bodmin Town Council on 01208 74159 or

Priory Meadow Wildflower Update
(1 July 2010)

Last year, a group of year 6 pupils from St Petroc’s School helped us to collect the seed of the Yellow Rattle from the Beacon LNR and sow the seed directly into the meadow. The latest news is that at least some of the seed has ‘taken’ and we now have Yellow Rattle plants in the meadow.
This is really good news as Yellow Rattle will begin to decrease the vigour of the strongly growing grasses in the meadow and thus allow the environment to become more appropriate for other wildflower species.
Further good news is that through a partnership with Cornwall Council, we now have the facility to grow wildflower seeds on as plug plants. We are trying to plan some collection events through the summer where we will collect various wildflower seed from the Beacon and send them for growing on through this facility. The plug plants would then be ready to plant back into the meadow next Spring and would hopefully then self seed to really increase the diversity of species in the meadow over the next few years.
Anyone who would be interested in volunteering some of their time to help in the collection of seed this summer should contact Judith Hayes, Projects Assistant on 01208 74159 or Judith.Hayes@bodmin.gov.uk
Priory Meadow Bug Hunt not spoiled by bad weather
(22 June 2010)

The weather did not smile on us for our Bug Hunt event on Tuesday 1st June 2010.
We had originally planned to spend some time in the public rooms making ‘ooters’ and bug houses before walking up to the meadow to try to find some real mini-beasts.
However, in light of the inclement weather, we found ourselves limited to the public rooms for the whole event. Even so, a good time was had by all attendees. The children enjoyed making ‘pooters’ and houses for solitary bees to put in their gardens. They also enjoyed colouring pictures of bugs, doing some bug dot to dot, completing word searches, and playing a game of Beetle!
All in all it was a successful event, and further events will be planned this summer. We hope that the weather will be more kind to us in future and we will be able to get out into the meadow to find some real bugs!
Anyone requiring further information or wishing to express an
interest in future events should contact Judith Hayes, Projects
Assistant on 01208 74159 or Judith.Hayes@bodmin.gov.uk
Wildflower Meadow Planned
(21 June 2010)

Priory Meadow is a 1.4 hectare ‘green breathing space’ on
the east side of Bodmin. It is bordered by housing estates on two sides, on one corner by St Petroc’s Primary School, and on the other side adjoins the more maintained recreation areas of Priory Park.
The meadow has been used by the public as a dog walking area for at least the past 20 years and lies adjacent to a footpath, which provides a direct link from the Eastern housing estates to the town centre.
It is planned to develop the area as a wildflower meadow, increasing the diversity of wildflower species present and adding a couple of groups of trees to encourage and develop the available habitats for insects, birds and mammals.
